Ferdinand Havis, Jefferson County, Ark. [graphic]. [189-?]

Negative taken of Ferdinand 'Ferd' Havis of Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. Born in Desha County, Ark., November 15, 1846. He moved to Pine Bluff in the 1860s to take advantage of the Freedmen's Bureau schools. By 1870, he was a prosperous barber. He was elected in 1871 to be an alderman in Pine Bluff, then elected to the House of Representatives in 1873. He was elected as a delegate to Republican National Convention from Arkansas, 1880, 1884, 1888. He served four years as assessor of Jefferson County and served briefly under a commission from Governor Baxter as a colonel in the Brooks-Baxter War. Havis was re-elected an alderman and in 1882 elected circuit clerk. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, the G.U.O.O.F. Lodge and United Brothers of Friendship.
